What is Grant Writing?

Definition

Grant writing is the application process wherein the organization seeking financial assistance explains what is proposes, how much money is needed to carry out the initiatives, and how the outcomes will be measured.

Research

Grant writing requires extensive research to identify which external funding sources will have the greatest interest in the project/program and what types of projects/programs they have previously helped funded.

Adding the Numbers

Grant writing calls for a realistic estimation of the funds required, a detailed accounting of how these funds will be allocated, and timeline of implementation and completion for the program/project. If the proposal is for an ongoing project, the grant must also address how the project will sustain itself after the grant funds are depleted.

Following Rules

Grant Writing requires strict adherence to all instructions in the grant application, including the manner in which the presentation package is formally assembled and delivered.

Writing Style

Generally, writing to a foundation calls for different style than writing for the government, a corporation, or an individual. You are building a case based on proven need and innovative solution.

Deadlines

The best grant writing won’t accomplish its goal if the proposal arrives in the mail after the window of opportunity has already closed. Stay focused! Keep your eyes on the calendar!
